FOP And Curry Say Even More Police Possible

On Wednesday the Fraternal Order of Police in Indianapolis endorsed Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry for reelection and announced the possibility of hiring even more police officers.

Rick Snyder, vice president of FOP Lodge #86, says when it comes to crime fighting Curry walks the walk and talks the talk.

"Whether it be routinely helping assemble life saving trauma kits for police agencies throughout Marion County, testifying at the Statehouse for enhancements in the Indiana Criminal Code, or aggessively prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law those who do harm to our police officers," says Snyder

Snyder also says the approval of the 2015 budget may allow for the hiring of even more than the 90 new officers announced by Mayor Greg Ballard in the public safety plan.  Snyder says the money will help IMPD build its capacity to train more recruits.

"If you think of the training academy as a funnel, you can only get so many people through the funnel at a time," explains Snyder. "What we are seeing with these increased revenues, the potential to expand that funnel and thereby expand the number of officers that can get through there."

Curry and the FOP say hiring more police officers isn’t the only answer but also encourage better cooperation and communication between law enforcement agencies in the county.

The FOP says Indy needs about 1,800 officers, right now there around 1,500.
