Hoosiers Wanted For Long Term Cancer Prevention Study

Hoosiers Wanted For Long Term Cancer Prevention Study

The American Cancer Society is coming to Indiana, Tuesday, looking for volunteers to help with a long-term prevention study.

The Society is making stops in Indianapolis and Lafayette.

"We've had such a great response from the community. Originally we wanted to enroll 1,000 (people), but we have over 1,000 appointments scheduled right now.  So, they opened up our capacity and we will be available to enroll up to 1,400," said Prevention Study Specialist Katie Crawford.  "The Indianapolis enrollment will definitely be one of the top 20 enrollments in the country."

The goal is to enroll about 300,000 people nationwide.

The participants will take part in follow ups every two to three years for the next 20 to 30 years. Crawford says that commitment helps validate the study.

"Ultimately we are looking to find out what causes and doesn't cause cancer, find cures, and help diminish suffering from cancer," said Crawford.

Enrollment in Indianapolis is at the Indiana Government Center and in Lafayette in the evening at Ivy Tech Community College.

"Our last study was 30 years ago.  That population is much older now too.  So it's important for us to have this new study and have a new group of participants that we can track," said Crawford.  "Especially having that blood sample available this time around will really give us so much more information about a person's risk."
