Jill Sheridan/WFYIIndiana Black Expo, IBE, turns 50 this year. IBE was founded in 1970, local organizers were inspired by an expo event in Chicago. The organization grew since then, says IBE President and CEO Tanya McKinzie.
"And has evolved into a year-round, statewide organization that serves and touches more than 400 thousand individuals each year," says McKinzie.
The Circle City Classic and Summer Celebration are IBE’s two main events and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett says the latter plays a significant role in the city.
"Its attendance has rivaled the Indianapolis 500 and its celebratory mood is often felt far beyond 10 days in July," says Hogsett.
The organization offers numerous programs and McKinzie says the impact has been felt through the decades.
"We have helped shape and advance African American culture, heritage and tradition while impacting numerous lives through economic, educational, social and leadership opportunities for youth and families," says McKinzie.
As part of its 50th anniversary IBE will undergo an assessment of its current and future impact in the community.
Plans for IBE’s largest event, Summer Celebration, were announced and feature show line ups that include Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill.
