'Religious Freedom' Bill Coming Soon For Debate

The Indiana Legislature is expected in the coming weeks to take up a proposal backed by conservative lawmakers that would give people and businesses broad religious freedom protections in state law.

The "religious freedom" legislation comes after last year's failed effort to advance a proposed state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, which federal courts later legalized in Indiana.

Social conservatives have pushed such bills in several states, asserting the right to have no dealings with gay marriages.

Republican Senate President Pro Tem David Long says the Indiana proposal isn't about gay marriage but aimed at limiting government intervention.

The ACLU of Indiana says the bill is unnecessary and is going after a problem that doesn't exist in the state.
