INDIANAPOLIS – History will officially be made on Monday, as Indiana Supreme Court Justice Loretta Rush will be formally sworn-in as Chief Justice of the state’s highest court.
She is the first woman in the nearly 200 years of the court to hold the position.
Current Chief Justice Brent Dickson – who said he would step down from his role as the court’s leader Sept. 1 – announced the date his colleague would take over his position. Dickson will remain a justice on the five-member court.
On August 6, the Judicial Nominating Commission selected Rush as Indiana Chief Justice from among the state’s current Supreme Court members. Rush was appointed as a member of the Supreme Court less than two years ago.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Monday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. in the Supreme Court Law Library. Gov. Mike Pence will administer the oath of office and both Rush and Dickson will speak on the historic occasion.
According to a statement released by the office of the Supreme Court, the ceremony will be brief, and current and former justices and appellate court judges will be in attendance.
