Second Annual Do Day Set For Indy On Thursday

Thursday is Indy Do Day 2014 and no matter where you go, you’re likely to see people volunteering to make Indianapolis a better place.

Around 15,000 volunteers from more than 100 different businesses and organizations will be painting murals, removing invasive honeysuckle, building fitness trails and ball parks or even writing wills for first responders as the second annual service day gets underway.

It began after a small group of people thought to unite Lilly Global Day of Service and United Way’s Day of Caring.  Ramona Adams, co-chair of Indy Do Day says the impact is awareness.

"People are seeing and hearing about the name Indy Do Day, social media is helping us get the word out," says Adams. "I know of a lot of people who are saying 'I've seen your PSA's, can't do it this year but I love it.'"

Adams says the goal is to make Indianapolis one of the most civically minded cities in the country.  Nearly 200,000 volunteer hours have been given locally since Eli-Lilly started the Day of Service in 2008.

Indy Do Day organizers plan to track the numbers this year to get a better idea of the real change being made in neighborhoods across the city.  Volunteers will also be involved in projects on Friday and Saturday.
