Andrea Neal was appointed to the State Board of Education in June 2013 by Gov. Mike Pence. Neal -- a history and English teacher at St. Richard’s Episcopal School and a former journalist -- was expected by many to support Pence’s repeal of the Common Core State Standards. And she did.

But Neal wound up voting against the new academic standards endorsed by Pence and Superintendent Glenda Rtiz because she felt they were weak and too similar to the Common Core.

In an editorial published by the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette this week, Neal called for Indiana to consider turning its back on more than $1 billion in federal education funds by rejecting the U.S. Department of Education’s waiver from the No Child Left Behind law. Neil believes Indiana schools can be more innovative without federal requirements.

She told WFYI education reporter Eric Weddle she was appointed to the state board because of her beliefs and she will continue fighting for what she this is best for students.
