A new look at the possible future of the interstate system in downtown Indianapolis is available through a new website focused on the ongoing overhaul of I-65/I-70.

The Rethink Coalition was created in response to plans to rebuild the interstate interloop downtown. When originally constructed, the highways cut through neighborhoods and displaced families and businesses.

The Indy Chamber has been involved in the effort from the start, and Vice President of Policy and Strategy Taylor Hughes said the latest renderings highlight the reimagining of the south split.

“To look at one spot where our interstate is already recessed and below grade and to study what would it look like to cap that, what are the potential impacts of capping and creating public space, and more efficient use around that infrastructure,” Hughes said.

That could provide opportunities for new housing, business and greenspace. The study highlights how a recessed option improves safety and economic opportunity. Last year the coalition received federal funding for a deeper planning study. That will start next year.

These newest renderings are the next step of visualization after a feasibility study from 2021. Renderings for other parts of the inner loop show recessed options for the stretch of I-65 west of the north split, which recently finished upgrades.

The public can explore the new website and join the conversation in shaping the interstate for the next generation. Brenda Freije is the president and CEO for the Rethink Coalition.

“If we do this, and we get all this accomplished, it will change Indianapolis, for a very long time, in a positive way,” Freije said.

INDOT’s ProPEL effort allows people to submit feedback directly to the state.

Other partners in the Rethink Coalition include Indiana Landmarks, Central Indiana Community Foundation and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization.
