The United States on Thursday carried out its second federal execution this week following a hiatus of nearly two decades, killing by lethal injection a Kansas man whose lawyers contended he had dementia and was unfit to be executed.

A judge on Wednesday halted the execution of a man, said to be suffering from dementia, who had been set to die by lethal injection in the governments second execution this week at the federal prison in Terre Haute.

The execution of Daniel Lewis Lee came over the objection of the victims relatives and following days of legal wrangling and delays.

The bishops of Indiana issued a joint statement Friday.

Indiana is one of 29 states that allows capital punishment. It's been nearly a decade since the state's last execution, and no new inmates have been added to Indiana's death row since 2013.

The U.S. Supreme Court wont take the case of an Indiana man convicted of murder who says his lawyers werent good enough.

The lawsuit filed on behalf of Roy Lee Ward says the death penalty violates several portions of Indiana's Constitution, including the right to life and the prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

Indiana can't use its preferred choice of lethal injection drug after the state Court of Appeals ruled it didn't use the proper rulemaking procedure.

Pursuing a death penalty sentence isn't cheap, but some argue you can't put a price on justice.
