Health insurance costs for Hoosiers on the federal health care marketplace are set to nearly double next year if Congress doesn't extend enhanced premium tax credits created during the Biden administration.

Indiana is expected to add a lot of solar power in the next five years — roughly equal to more than five Hoover Dams. Most of that will be on the ground — something some rural Hoosiers don't like. There could be another option — put solar on hundreds of millions of square feet of unused space on top of big box stores and warehouses.

A proposal to give eligible families a $500 tax credit for newborns failed to pass this legislative session. Advocates continue to push for the tax credit they say will improve Hoosiers' financial stability and health.

Senate Bill 497 would create a $500 tax credit per newborn child for eligible taxpayers — or $250 for a married person filing a separate return.

The non-profit organization is one of only four groups nationwide to receive the funds. The New Market Tax Credits are a competitive, financial tool that organizations can use to build housing for low-income families.
