BP North America will have to pay $40 million for air violations at its Whiting Refinery in northwest Indiana — the largest federal penalty ever imposed for industrial air pollution.

The emergency waiver was granted Saturday for Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin in response to a fire last week at an Indiana oil refinery that could affect prices and supply.

The groups say these landfills shouldnt have been exempt from stricter coal ash rules in 2015.

The Andersons Marathon Holdings LLC agreed to the fine as part of a settlement on Tuesday with the Environmental Protection Agency.

The penalty is part of a settlement Metalworking Lubricants Company reached with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management late last week.

PFOS and PFOA are two types of the group of industrial chemicals called PFAS. PFAS have been linked to cancer, problems with the immune system, and developmental issues in children.

The EPA wants to inject the groundwater in and around the site with material that will make the harmful chemicals in the water less toxic.

The Indiana Senate narrowly upheld a veto that Gov. Eric Holcomb issued last year on a bill that would have required additional labeling for fuel pumps distributing E15, a fuel blend that contains up to 15% ethanol in gasoline.

The EPA is denying requests by three Midwest power plants to extend operations of leaking or otherwise dangerous coal ash storage ponds. EPA says plants in Indiana, Ohio and Iowa will have to close coal ash ponds months or years ahead of schedule.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said long-term exposure to ethylene oxide increases your risk for cancers of the white blood cells like non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma, and lymphocytic leukemia (chronic or acute). It can also increase the risk for breast cancer in women.
