Another Winter Storm Warning For Central Indiana

It won’t be the 20 inches of snow rumored on social media this past week, but Hoosiers are being advised to prepare for another blast of nasty winter weather.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a winter storm warning for much of Central Indiana effective from 1 p.m. Tuesday through 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and frigid air will mix to produce "another round of significant snow and some mixed precipitation to Central Indiana,” the NWS said in a statement.

The forecast is for 5 to 10 inches of snow, with the heaviest amounts of 7 to 10 inches predicted from the northside of Indianapolis and northward. The NWS says 5 to 8 inches of snow is expected to fall along the Interstate 70 corridor.

The storm should last from midday Tuesday to midday Wednesday, with the heaviest snow falling from late afternoon Tuesday through 2 a.m. Wednesday.

To the south of Indianapolis, the storm is expected to deliver a mix of precipitation.

“Roads may become impassable and very slick due to heavy snow and drifts, sleet and freezing rain,” the NWS statement said.

Snow and sleet accumulations could reach 3 to 5 inches with one to two tenths of an inch of ice possible.

The NWS is encouraging people to not travel during the winter storm warning.

“If you must travel,” the NWS said, “keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”
