Authorities say a pilot was presumed dead after a small plane hit power lines and crashed in a farm field in northern Indiana.

The plane crashed Thursday night about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) east of Goshen Municipal Airport. Elkhart County Sheriff Jeff Siegel says the pilot was believed to be the only one aboard.

Witnesses reported seeing the plane dive into the field, hitting the power lines on the way down. Emergency crews at the crash site had to use extreme caution because of high-voltage lines on the ground.

Siegel says his office was handling the crash as a death investigation and awaited investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct a review.
