Gretchen FrazeeAbout 30,000 Hoosiers will be getting refunds from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles in the coming weeks. This is in addition to refunds issued last year.
The refunds will go to Hoosiers overcharged for certain fees, including payments for mobile home titles and for not having proof of insurance. Those refunds are expected to total about $2 million.
BMV officials say they also undercharged thousands of customers, costing the state about $13 million.
That’s on top of about $60 million the state had to pay out over the last two years for other BMV mistakes.
In response, Gov. Mike Pence says the BMV will create a new internal audit department to keep a check on its financial system.
“This is a system that is oftentimes so complicated and so confusing that the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing," Pence said. "We’re going to fix that.”
The governor also named Kent Abernathy to replace Don Snemis as the BMV commissioner. Abernathy is the current chief of staff at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
