Columbus Bridge To Be Named For 'Iron Men of Metz'

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) — The Indiana Department of Transportation is renaming a southern Indiana bridge for a World War II unit that captured the French city of Metz in November 1944.

INDOT says the U.S. Highway 31 bridge at Clifty Creek on the east side of Columbus will be renamed Friday for the "Iron Men of Metz." They were soldiers of the 95th U.S. Army Division who fought their way through Nazi strongholds to capture the city in northeastern France at its borders with Germany and Luxembourg. It says five of the "Iron Men of Metz" and their families will be in Columbus for a reunion over the weekend.

The ceremony begins at 1 p.m. Friday.
