Indianapolis Metropolitan Police are investigating the death of a female infant found Sunday by a hiker on the outskirts of Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.

The child was found about 30 feet from a parking area in the 8200 block of Wilson Road on the city's northwest side.

The infant was found wrapped in a blue sweatshirt with a logo that reads “Aviation Maintenance Vincennes University-Indianapolis” on the front. Detectives believe the infant may have been born as early as the day before Sunday.

Police ask anyone who recognizes the sweatshirt or may have information regarding the child's death to contact them at (317)-327-3475 or, if someone with information wishes to remain anonymous, they can call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.

Authorities are also reminding the public about the state’s Safe Haven Infant Protection Act.Under that law, a parent, family member, friend, social worker, minster or priest can anonymously give up custody of any child less than 30 days at any hospital emergency room, police station or fire station without fear of arrest or prosecution.
