WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say the death of a 19-year-old Purdue University student who fell from the balcony of an apartment on the top floor of a 10-story complex near campus has been ruled a suicide.

West Lafayette police Lt. Jon Eager tells the Journal & Courier that other people in the apartment with the student told police they were trying to talk with her when she left the room early Saturday, climbed through a window and jumped. Eager says she lived in the apartment.

The death occurred during Purdue's Homecoming weekend. The university says the student's family has requested privacy and has asked that the university not release additional details.

The apartment complex near the school's West Lafayette campus opened about a month ago.
