INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Federal grants totaling more than $476,000 have been awarded to 11 historic preservation and archaeology projects in Indiana communities.

The National Park Service grants announced last week include three of more than $50,000 each to Ball State University for projects in Henry, Montgomery and Ripley counties.

One will be used to complete an archaeological survey of about 80 acres around historic homestead sites within Versailles State Park that may expand what's known about early statehood.

Ball State also will survey about 120 acres at the Wilbur Wright Fish & Wildlife Area near New Castle and may document about 60 newly identified archaeological sites.

Ball State also will conduct an archaeology survey of the Calvert and Porter Woods Nature Preserve in Crawfordsville that has been designated a National Natural Landmark.
