Updated Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.

Citizens Energy Group says workers have begun closing lanes of Illinois Street in preparation for Dig Indy project construction.

Illinois Street will be down to one lane by Wednesday morning between McCarty and South streets. The full closure is expected to begin early next week and will continue through July 2020.

The road was scheduled to close Monday, but a water line in the area required additional maintenance and delayed the start of the Dig Indy work.

Construction work that would have closed a section of Illinois Street beginning Monday has been delayed, leaving the road open to traffic for now.

Laura O'Brien, Citizens Energy Group communications coordinator, says the delay is caused by a water line in the area that needs additional maintenance. There is no word yet on exactly how long the road will remain open.

The construction is part of Citizens Energy Group’s Dig Indy Tunnel System project. Once the work does begin, Illinois Street will be closed between McCarty and South streets through July 2020.

Detour signs will be posted for through traffic.

The Dig Indy system includes a 28 mile long network of underground tunnels to eliminate sewer overflows into waterways.
