Indiana Jobless Rate Up Slightly To 5.9 Percent

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's unemployment rate rose slightly to 5.9 percent in June, marking the state's first increase in almost two years.

Figures released Friday by the state Department of Workforce Development show Indiana's jobless mark went up by two-tenths of a percentage point from May. The last time Indiana recorded rise in the unemployment rate was when it went up slightly to 8.2 percent in September 2012.

State officials say Indiana gained 10,000 private sector jobs in June, but that the jobless rate rose because about 4,000 people rejoined the labor force looking for jobs. Indiana is below the national mark of 6.1 percent.

The new report shows about 200,000 people were looking for jobs in Indiana last month. Western Indiana's Vermillion County has the state's highest jobless rate at 8.8 percent.
