Ind. Youth Institute President: Decline In Youth Sports Participation 'Troubling'

Fewer kids are playing in youth sports leagues these days. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that while the number of American kids declined less than 1 percent between 2008 and 2012, participation in organized sports dropped about 4 percent. Explanations for the decrease ranged from the recession to video games to an overemphasis on winning.

Bill Stanczykiewicz president and CEO of the Indiana Youth Institute, told WFYI’s Michelle Johnson that the trend is troubling.
