An exhibit at the Indianapolis Zoo has been nominated for USA Today’s 10 Best Zoo Exhibits.

Zoo spokesperson Carla Knapp says the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center has been widely regarded as one of the most significant zoo exhibits in the world, since its opening in 2014.

“Orangutans are critically endangered in the wild, so we really want to engage our guests by allowing them opportunities to come in and learn more about orangutans,” Knapp says.

Knapp says it’s an incredible honor to be nominated.

“We are up alongside some of the very best zoos and aquariums in the United States,” she says.

The center is home to 12 orangutans — one of the largest group in any American zoo.

The national contest will be determined by a public vote. The voting goes on through April 30.
