Drew Daudelin/IPBSINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Supreme Court says the state's newest justice will join the high court next week.
The court said Tuesday that Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush will swear in Indianapolis attorney Geoffrey Slaughter on Monday, allowing him to begin deciding cases and handling administrative matters with his colleagues.
An investiture ceremony will be Aug. 11. Slaughter will hear his first oral arguments as a member of the court on June 23.
Gov. Mike Pence chose Slaughter last month to succeed Justice Brent Dickson, who retired in April after more than 30 years on the court. Pence picked Slaughter from among three finalists.
The 53-year-old Slaughter said when he was chosen that he expected to wrap up his law practice and join the court within six weeks.
