Indy CD & Vinyl will host a grand reopening event this weekend, marking a new chapter in the 23-year history of the Broad Ripple record store.
The event will feature live music and store specials all weekend long, and unveil The 808, a new all-ages community stage and events space located next door.
The new venue has transformed and expanded into the space, previously home to local bar Landsharks. Following a fatal shooting inside the bar early last year, the space was permanently closed. Owners Annie and Andy Skinner said it left behind not only another empty retail space in the area, but a cloud over the community.
“We were stunned and heartbroken,” the owners shared. “But after processing the loss, we realized we had a responsibility. We could either keep doing what we were doing — or we could step up and help redefine what this neighborhood could be.”
A small indoor stage at Indy CD & Vinyl has previously hosted a number of performances, from big-name bands like Mumford & Sons to events for local nonprofits. Once a defining feature of the stores’ operations, it became unsafe to operate these intimate shows during COVID, halting many concert series and possible activities.
With these concerns — and hopes to bring live music back to the store — in mind, The 808 venue has now been completely reimagined from the ground-up, with new walls, doors and plumbing.
“We’ve missed being a space where kids could explore music, where local organizations could gather, and where fans could connect with artists up close,” said the owners. “The 808 brings that all back — and more.”
Indy CD & Vinyl will be open 11 to 7 and celebrating all weekend long.
