INDIANAPOLIS -- Marion County Sheriff John Layton is warning the public of a jury duty scam.

In the scam, callers are representing themselves as Sheriff’s Office officials, and using the names of actual Marion Superior Court Judges. They tell victims that they have missed jury duty and must pay a fine; or be arrested. One recent victim lost $750 after providing his credit card information to the imposters.

In a press release, Layton called the scheme "shameful.” “The Marion County Sheriff’s Office will never contact citizens seeking telephone fines for failed jury service,” he said.

Upon receiving such a call telephone call, the recipient should contact the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Division at (317) 327-1400.
