Lugar Lies In State At Statehouse As Hundreds Say Goodbye

Former Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), who died last month, returned to Indianapolis Tuesday, where he lies in state at the Statehouse.

Gov. Eric Holcomb, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and hundreds of Hoosiers gathered to say goodbye.

Holcomb’s remarks were emotional. He choked up as he reflected on the Hoosier icon’s life and accomplishments – a life of “historic” service, as Holcomb says.

“May our journeys be just as meaningful and fulfilling," Holcomb says. "Welcome home, Sen. Lugar.”

Mayor Joe Hogsett says, to Hoosiers, to the country and to the world, Richard Lugar meant hope.

“He fought hatred; he did not court it," Hogsett says. "He calmed fear; he did not attempt to use it.”

Lugar will lie in state until his funeral Wednesday at St. Luke’s United Methodist, a church in Indianapolis where his family were founding members.
