INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Marion County Clerk's office says 186 same-sex couples were wed at its downtown Indianapolis office Wednesday after a federal judge overturned Indiana's gay marriage ban.
The clerk's office says it issued more than 200 marriage licenses to gay couples Wednesday and the office remained open more than six hours past its normal closing time to handle the influx of gay couples seeking marriage licenses.
The office says 186 of those couples were wed in civil ceremonies Wednesday at the office. Two heterosexual couples were also married there Wednesday.
The clerk's office planned to resume issuing marriage licenses and holding civil ceremonies at 8 a.m. Thursday.
Indiana's attorney general has asked U.S. District Judge Richard Young to stay his order allowing gay marriages as the state appeals the ruling.
