INDIANAPOLIS -- Overnight closures on Interstate 65 along the northside of downtown Indianapolis will continue this week.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says crews are doing mainentance and modernaization work on I-65 bridges spanning the northside of the downtown area, from Senate Avenue to Alabama Street. They've been underneath the bridges, patching concrete, painting steel and wrapping bridge piers with a fiber-reinforced plastic to protect and strengthen the structure.

It's construction on the bridge decks above that will significantly affect overnight traffic. INDOT says during a maximum of 20 overnight closures, crews will seal joints between each bridge span to prevent moisture from penetrating and deteriorating the structures' concrete and steel.  Concrete pavement will also be repaired.

The following construction schedule is subject to change.

Northbound I-65 closures

Recurring CLOSURE OF ALL LANES of northbound I-65 are scheduled to continue through Monday night starting at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Advanced warning signs direct through traffic - including large trucks - to take I-465 around Indianapolis.

During the overnight closures of northbound I-65:

  • The northbound I-65 Exit 114 ramp to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street/West Street will close temporarily, and
  • The Pine Street entrance ramp to northbound I-65 will close temporarily.

Southbound I-65 closures

After northbound work is complete, night crews will move to complete similar work on southbound I-65.

Nightly closures on the southbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian and Pennsylvania Streets are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Tue., Oct. 11 and are scheduled to repeat for two nights through 6 a.m. on Thurs., Oct. 13.

Work on southbound I-65 is scheduled to CLOSE ALL BUT ONE LANE during weeknights between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. starting Thursday, Oct. 13.  The Exit 113 ramps to and from Pennsylvania and Meridian Streets will remain open while lanes are closed on southbound I-65.

During the overnight southbound I-65 lane closures, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street/West Street entrance ramp to southbound I-65 will close.

INDOT says work requiring closures will not take place on Friday nights or Saturday nights.
