Brandon Smith/IPB NewsRedistricting reform advocates rallied outside the Statehouse Wednesday with a clear message for lawmakers – draw competitive legislative maps in an open, transparent way.
The rally preceded the final meeting in an initial set of legislative hearings held around the state over the last few days.
Marilyn Moran Townsend is a Republican member of the Indiana Citizens Redistricting Commission, which advocates for fair maps. She said lawmakers need to hold more public hearings, after they propose new district maps.
“It is the only way that we get real public input – public wisdom – through the people to our government leaders,” Townsend said.

Barbara Bolling Williams, with the Indiana State Conference of the NAACP, was more direct on what she sees as the consequences of unfair maps.
“What do we get? Representing the people are bullies, thugs and sheep,” Williams said.
Lawmakers are expected to unveil the proposed maps next month.
