Indianapolis and state officials celebrated the completion of a section of trail that will eventually connect Indianapolis, Fishers and Noblesville.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Public Works joined city officials in celebrating the latest Nickel Plate Trail segment with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new asphalt section of the trail has been under construction since 2023, spanning just over ten miles.

The ceremony was held at the trailhead on Allisonville Road on Tuesday and was open to community members. Mayor Joe Hogsett and Councilor Dan Boots were among local and state representatives who spoke.

“This path is not just another way to visit neighbors,” said Hogsett. “It also represents safe transport for cyclists and pedestrians, [and] commuters in all of our cities. It also represents increased foot traffic that will stand to benefit our local businesses and residents along the way.”

The goal is to connect a multitude of state landmarks, including Fort Harrison State Park, Conner Prairie and the state fairgrounds.

“The collective vision of this group and persistence have created something beautiful that will serve our residents for generations to come,” said Councilor Dan Boots.

A connecting piece of the trial under I-465 is expected to be completed by the Indiana Department of Transportation in the coming year.
