RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) — An eastern Indiana county that abuts Ohio issued more than half of its marriage licenses for same-sex couples last year to gay and lesbian couples from Ohio.
The Palladium-Item newspaper reviewed Wayne County records and found that of the 37 licenses issued for same-sex couples, 22 were for couples where both partners are Ohio residents. Eleven licenses were issued for Indiana couples.
That means about 60 percent of the county's same-sex marriage licenses went to Ohio couples, while only about 30 percent of the licenses went to Indiana couples.
Indiana had a ban on gay marriage until it was ruled unconstitutional last year.
Wayne County Clerk Debra Berry says that because Ohio doesn't allow same-sex couples to marry "of course they would come to Indiana."
