More than 75,000 Marion County students head back to school in July, weeks before the vast majority of the nation’s children. Schools in Wayne, Perry and Warren townships and Beech Grove return this week.

Indianapolis Public Schools and the other township districts in the county will begin next week — when several independently managed charter schools also open.

That’s unusually early compared to schools around the nation. A 2019 analysis from the Pew Research Center estimated that just 2 percent of U.S. students attended schools that opened the week of July 23 through Aug. 2.

Indianapolis districts often have longer breaks throughout the school year paired with shorter summer vacations.
