Services Begin For Slain Southport Police Officer

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Two days of memorial services began Friday afternoon for a police officer who was fatally shot while trying to help a man trapped inside an overturned car in Indianapolis.

Visitation for Southport police Lt. Aaron Allan was at Crown Hill Funeral Home in Indianapolis on Friday afternoon from 2 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for the 38-year-old married father of two sons will be Saturday at Banker's Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis, with hundreds of police officers expected among the mourners.

Authorities say Allan was trying to help 28-year-old Jason Brown after a July 27 car crash when Brown suddenly became agitated and opened fire, striking the officer 11 times. Brown faces murder charges and has been hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds after two officers fired on him following Allan's shooting.

The procession route from Crown Hill Funeral Home to Banker's Life Fieldhouse will begin at 7 a.m. The route will be:

  • South on Clarendon Road to East 38th Street
  • East on 38th Street to Meridian Street
  • South on Meridian Street to North Street
  • East on North Street to Pennsylvania Street 
  • South on Pennsylvania Street to Bankers Life

After the services, the procession will travel from Banker's Life Fieldhouse to the Southport Police Department and then back to Crown Hill Cemetery. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police are encouraging residents to pay respect to Lt. Allan by lining the streets, but ask that they not park along the route, which will be:

  • North on Pennsylvania Street to Washington Street
  • West on Washington St. to Capitol Ave
  • South on Capitol Avenue to McCarty Street
  • East on McCarty Street to Madison Avenue
  • South on Madison Avenue to Banta Avenue
  • East on Banta Avenue to Derbyshire Road
  • South on Derbyshire to Southport Police Department.
  • Proceed south to Southport Road
  • West on Southport Road to U.S. 31
  • North on U.S. 31 to Delaware Street
  • North on Delaware Street to Michigan Street
  • West on Michigan Street to Illinois Street
  • North on Illinois Street to 34th Street
  • West on 34th Street to Graceland Street
  • West on 34th Street to entrance of Crown Hill Cemetery
