South Split Back Open

South Split Back Open

Drivers who frequent the downtown interstate system are pleased to find the half-mile stretch of Interstate 65 and Interstate 70, known as the "south split," back open, more than two weeks ahead of schedule.

Work started Labor Day weekend and was to have taken 90 days.  The pavement was rebuilt and lowered to raise clearances for semis and other high-profile vehicles.  Video showed oversized loads striking south split bridges with increasing frequency and severity, and beams and bridges had become cracked.
