To commemorate the Tab Recreation program’s 90th anniversary, everyone who has participated as a player, coach, family member or friend is invited to a celebration on Sept. 13.
Started in 1924 by Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, the Tab Recreation program has seen approximately 100,000 youth age 5-14 take part in football, basketball, soccer, softball, track, cheerleading, chess leagues and more. Today, 1,800 children participate in eight sports annually.
Some Tab Recreation participants have gone on to play professional sports, including George Hill of the Indiana Pacers; new IUPUI basketball coach Jason Gardner; Roosevelt Colvin, who retired from the New England Patriots; and Mark Clayton, a five-time Pro Bowler who played most of his career with the Miami Dolphins. Others rose to state and local leadership positions, including Purdue University President and former Gov. Mitch Daniels and Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.
As event co-chairs, Tabernacle Presbyterian Church Senior Pastor John Gable and Tab member Angela Braly lead a volunteer committee charged with celebrating the program’s heritage and positioning it to launch into the future, as expansion plans are in the works.
“It’s amazing to think of all the people who have been a part of Tabernacle Recreation during its 90 years, and of the many more who will be a part of its exciting future,” said Pastor Gable. “Lives have been changed on these playing fields, they’re still being changed today, and even more will be changed in the years to come.”
To ensure that everyone with a connection to Tab Recreation can be kept up to date on the celebration and receive news about plans for the future, program alumni are encouraged to register at http://tabpres.org/recreation/.
