INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A winter storm that brought a mixture of freezing rain, sleet, rain and snow to Indiana produced lighter amounts of ice than forecasters had predicted.
National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Tucek says about one-tenth of an inch of ice fell across central Indiana counties that were under an ice storm warning, which ended at 7 a.m. Monday. He says the highest ice accumulations were about two-tenths of an inch in Tipton and the Lafayette area.
Forecasters had predicted a quarter-inch of ice would accumulate overnight along the Interstate 70 corridor. But Tucek says slightly warmer air and lighter precipitation reduced the icing amounts.
The overnight icing still prompted some Monday school closures and school delays.
Sharply colder air is forecast to spill across Indiana on Monday afternoon, creating slick conditions.
