Earlier this month, Amtrak announced it submitted applications for more than $700 million in Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) funds

Amtrak service could be developed between Indianapolis and Louisville if a new planning grant application is approved.

Amtraks Hoosier State Line made one final round trip between Indianapolis and Chicago Sunday before discontinuing service. For some on board, it was an emotional day.

While riders say they're disappointed to see the service end, state officials say the numbers speak for themselves.

The pilot project comes after Indiana lawmakers discontinued funding for Amtrak's Hoosier State passenger line in the new state budget.

Todd Rokita was a Republican member of the House Transportation Committee during his eight years in Congress.

The four-days-a-week train won't run after June 30, which is when its $3 million annual state subsidy ends.

Some lawmakers say the passenger line is part of Indiana's economic future.

Amtrak is also contacting people who've booked seats, warning them they might need to make other travel arrangements if Indiana lawmakers end funding for the line.

The Hoosier State is one of Amtrak's 29 state-supported routes around the country. The line's ridership is the smallest of the state-supported routes
