Carmel officials have delayed action for at least two weeks on a proposal that would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

A proposal to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity was tabled this week in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel following a push by social conservatives, but the decision may be short lived.

NextGear Capital plans to invest more than $50 million to lease and renovate its headquarters in Carmel. The investment would support its expanding customer service and technology divisions.

Acting City Council president Kevin Rider said during a Monday night meeting that the proposal won't be fast-tracked. Debate on the ordinance is set to continue at a committee meeting Thursday.

Over 70,000 people are expected to tour the temple before it closes to the public August 8.

Indianapolis is joining Carmel, Westfield and Greenwood in an economic development group that will seek millions of dollars in state grants.
