Residents at East Chicago, Indianas toxic Superfund site got an opportunity Wednesday to voice their concerns on the Environmental Protection Agency communication about health risks.

The EPAs Office of Inspector General wants to know how residents and government agencies feel the EPA communicated health risks from Superfund sites.

The EPA says sediment will be dredged in Hammond and East Chicago, Indiana. Work is expected to be completed in 2020.

More than 1,000 people were forced from the West Calumet Housing Complex in 2016 after tests found high blood-lead levels in children.

EPA soil remediation began in 2016. Its cleaned up nearly 600 residential properties. There are 170 additional properties slated for cleanup.

Due to the government shutdown, the EPA canceled a public meeting on the cleanup three weeks ago.

Residents are concerned about a contingency that allows the agency to use a less stringent cleanup plan if the city moves forward with industrial, instead of residential, redevelopment.

East Chicago residents say a public meeting on the USS Lead Superfund cleanup last week left questions unanswered and several people didn't get a chance to speak.

The EPA says it's possible that the USS Lead site is contaminating the groundwater with arsenic and lead.

Residents questioned the EPA representatives about ongoing health hazards, groundwater contamination, and testing consistency across East Chicago's Superfund site.
