A powerful winter storm has begun slowly carving its way across the eastern two-thirds of the U.S., potentially bringing a mix of heavy snow, dangerous ice and bitterly cold temperatures.

Sheriff Kerry Forestal said the jail reached capacity as a result of 175 people convicted of state crimes awaiting transfer to state prison facilities and could result in a budgetary shortfall of around $2.7 million for the office.

Bundled in tan prison garb and coats emblazoned with “ICE,” dozens of immigrant detainees at Miami Correctional Facility played cards and checkers in a common room outside their cells.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been transporting detainees out of the Indianapolis International Airport. More than four dozen ICE flights since early July have gone through the airport. The federal agency uses a private facility separate from the main two concourses a few times per week.

About 100 people gathered Monday to support immigration detainees at the state prison near Kokomo, Indiana.

Border czar Tom Homan spoke at an event Tuesday, hosted at the Statehouse by Attorney General Todd Rokita and Representative J.D. Prescott (R-Union City).

Some councilors threatened to withhold their vote for his annual budget.

Gov. Mike Braun said he wants the federal government to reimburse Indiana for any costs related to state personnel helping enforce federal immigration laws.
