Officials with the Indiana Department of Transportation say the years-long push to connect Indiana north to south via Interstate 69 is on schedule to open to traffic in 2024.

Construction will begin soon on the final section of the Interstate 69 project that began more than 10 years ago to connect Evansville to Indianapolis.

Southern Indiana officials shared their concerns about the Sherman Minton Bridge project during a closed meeting with the Indiana Department of Transportation's commissioner.

The ramp closures will happen during overnight hours between Sept. 30 to Oct. 11.

INDOT says the eastbound lanes of I-70 are currently closed between Mt. Comfort Rd (Exit 96) and State Road 109 at Knightstown. All lanes will remain closed until Monday, Sept. 16 at 6 a.m.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says it will shut down the I-465 lanes running westbound and southbound between I-65 and I-70 on the city's southeast side beginning Friday night.

The agency says at least one lane will be open in each direction of I-70 at all times during construction work that will stretch through November.

This week's meetings will give the public an overview of the Mid-States Corridor Project and explain the road's purpose.

The long-planned project is designed to improve the I-65 / I-70 interchange near downtown Indianapolis. INDOT says the interchange, which is the second-most heavily traveled in the state, has been deteriorating for years.
