Gov. Eric Holcomb has signed a bill allowing a company to go ahead with plans for potentially storing 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide underground near Terre Haute.

The bill opens the door to Indianas first new casinos in a decade. The measure also potentially allows gambling in every Indiana community thats by legalizing sports wagering, including online and mobile.

The carbon dioxide storage is part of a $450 million plan to build an anhydrous ammonia fertilizer plant near Terre Haute.

The bill approved by lawmakers last month restricts such carbon storage in Indiana to a pilot site near Terre Haute and calls for a special legislative committee to review the process.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma is doing legal work for the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board, which is among the entities supporting the bill that includes allowing a proposed Terre Haute casino.

Lawmakers severed the ties between a Gary casino and potential new casino in Terre Haute.

The bill allows a Gary casino to move inland, away from the waterfront, allows a casino to open in Terre Haute, and legalizes sports wagering, including online.

The Sycamore Pantry opened Thursday at ISU's Student Recreation Center in Terre Haute. It's stocked with food, drinks, baby food and toiletries for students and their dependents.

The roughly 700 employees at the Federal Corrections Complex in Terre Haute are considered essential; that means they have to keep coming to work despite the lack of pay.

Some lawmakers in the 2019 session will once again push to put a casino in Terre Haute. But that prospect still looks unlikely.
