Staff Spotlight: ShaDonna Rolling

As a member of WFYI, you power the stories you love and rely on; but someone has to produce, distribute, fundraise for and promote those stories. Each month here in the Insiders' Magazine, you'll see a series introducing you to the team here at WFYI. Learn about journalists, radio producers, administrative specialists and all the dedicated individuals who — alongside your support — bring you the shows you care about.

What does your work usually entail?

I spend a good portion of my day (though not enough!) talking with our donors about their impact and partnership with WFYI. I also dedicate a good portion of my time collaborating with colleagues on innovative ways to reach new donors while "loving on" the ones we already have.

Do you have any advice for those who'd like to follow in your footsteps?

I would say that anyone wanting to be a public media fundraiser should be passionate about their work and deeply appreciative of those that support it. We're living in a time where so many people are stretched financially. Yet, more than 28 thousand donors find it in their hearts to support WFYI each year. There is so much need! Fundraisers must stay humble, passionate and always mindful to show gratitude.

When you're not at work, what can you often be found doing?

When I am not at work, my husband and I are ripping and running to see our families in Ohio and Michigan... I also tend to indulge in a lot of period piece films and shows. I just finished The Gilded Age (by the creator of Downtown Abbey) and was in love with the acting, the sets — all of it.

What do you enjoy most about working at WFYI?

You know, it's refreshing to say that I work in a place where I'm always learning from everyone around me. From leadership to my own teams, everyone has something to offer, and it's a joy to rise to that challenge daily.

If you had to take one WFYI program with you to a desert island, what would it be and why?

Rick Steves anything! Growing up, my folks worked hard, but traveling was not something we could always afford. So Rick Steves programming has always been my window to the world and an inspiration for traveling. A place to dream, plan, you name it!
