Chuck Brewer, Republican candidate for Mayor of Indianapolis
Photo by Ryan Delaney, WFYI NewsINDIANAPOLIS -- Republican mayoral candidate Chuck Brewer wants 150 more police officers on the streets of Indianapolis. In his plan to improve public safety, released Thursday, Brewer said several of those officers would be dedicated to a drug task force.
Brewer's Democratic opponent, Joe Hogsett, also recently proposed hiring 150 more beat cops.
Brewer said he would also ask for body and dashboard cameras for officers. There has been an intensified conversation about body cameras following police fatally shooting a 15-year-old carjacking suspect over the weekend.

Brewer's "12-Point Public Safety Plan" also calls for hiring 21 civilian Social Resource Officers, who would connect high-risk families with social service agencies to provide treatment, counseling and other services. They would also work with family members of homicide victims and those who had been victims of other crimes.
Among other things, it would also reinstate the Indianapolis VIolence Reduction Partnership, and launch an "enhanced community policing initiative."
