Concussions Addressed By Alliance

A sports organization based in Indianapolis is joining forces with others around the country to prevent and manage concussions in athletes.  The National Sports Concussion Coalition is being billed as the most comprehensive alliance of its kind, working with medical, science and sports leaders to provide a safer playing field.  A leader in in tackling preventative measures for young athletes, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is joining the effort.

"It's important that we use best practices... to make sure that coaches know how to teach proper technique," ACSM Senior Director of Communications, Dan Henkel said.

The organization unites with the diverse group that will apply evidence-based approaches to managing sports related concussions. While football is often most closely tied to the injuries, the alliance will also cover a variety of other sports.

Concussions are a hot button topic right now.  Tuesday at 9 p.m., WFYI 1 will air the somewhat controversial "Frontline" documentary “League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis.”
