Drivers are still trying to find the best way around Indianapolis with the recent closure of the north split.

Indiana Department of Transportation spokesperson Mallory Duncan said there has been an increase in traffic on the recommended Interstate 465 detour, but traffic is moving smoothly.

“Basically people are finding their routes and getting around the best that they can,” Duncan said.

The project, which closed I-65/70 through downtown, is expected to last 18 months. Duncan said there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

“Taking bridges down, taking all the concrete down and all the infrastructure and rebuilding it.” Duncan said.

INDOT is looking at the increased traffic on the south side of I-465 and will install ramp metering to monitor traffic flow.
