INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A proposed bill in the Indiana Senate would make it a felony for abortions to be performed if the provider knows the procedure is being sought because of the fetus' gender or genetic disability.
Indiana Right to Life President Mike Fichter told The Indianapolis Star he supports the bill proposed by Republican Sen. Travis Holdman of Markle. Fichter says his organization believes an unborn child should not be discriminated against based on disability or sex.
Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky President Betty Cockrum says she is concerned about the breadth of the bill, which would apply to a diagnosis or "potential diagnosis" of a disability.
The bill has been assigned to the Senate's Health and Provider Services committee
