Law enforcement officials announced charges Tuesday against a man who allegedly shot an Indianapolis police officer in Fountain Square last week.

Mylik Hill, 32, was charged with two counts of attempted murder, six counts of resisting law enforcement, one count of criminal mischief and one count of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felony for his alleged role in the Feb. 27 shooting.

On the night of the shooting Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to an accident on Woodlawn Avenue. Witnesses pointed officers to a red Buick and Hill, who they believed was involved in the accident, police say.

According to court documents, Hill ran from officers and shot at them. There was a gunfire exchanged between at least one officer and Hill in an alley. Officer Thomas Mangan was shot in the throat and another bullet hit his police radio on his hip. Mangan was taken to the hospital where he remains today recovering in serious but stable condition.

With help from the Indiana State Police, citizens and a drone, IMPD SWAT officer located Hill on the 900 block of Dawson Street. Hill also sustained gunshot injuries and is currently in police custody at a local hospital.

Mangan is a new officer to the force, according to IMPD. He had been working as a patrol officer for about three weeks at the time of the incident and was undergoing field training.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said at a press conference Tuesday the incident underscores the risks police officers take every day.

“He was responding to the scene trying to make this community a better place, a safer place. And this case took a tragic turn of events,” Mears said. “It also goes to show the level of selflessness that these officers display and their effort to try to help us and try to make our community a better place when they respond to these types of situations.”

IMPD Chief Randal Taylor said Mangan’s recovery is expected to be a long one.

“He is an incredible example of an officer that is dealing with a traumatic injury that he's going to have to deal with for a while,” Taylor said. “This is not going to be a short recovery, unfortunately. But his spirit is light.”
