Indiana workplaces set a new low last year for on the job injuries and illnesses last year. Since 1992, the Indiana State Department of Labor has tracked the data that reports on Injuries and illnesses related to work incidents. There were more than 84,000 incidents in 2016 – a 5 percent drop from 2015 and a 69 percent drop from a 1994 high.
Local government – which includes police, emergency management, and street maintence workers – has the highest incidence rate. Healthcare workers also account for more injuries and illnesses which can include exposure to infectious diseases or pathogens.
Construction and manufacturing incidents have declined for years. Indiana-based Safety Management Group manager Jesse Brazzell says awareness is on the rise.
“About 20 years ago it was not uncommon to have conversation with a worker out on the job site about why they should wear a hard hat and safety glasses,” says Brazzell.
The report notes the decline is particularly notable because more Hoosiers than ever are employed. Administrative jobs represent the lowest rate.
