INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Two Indianapolis police officers who fatally shot an unarmed black motorist could face firing when they go before a civilian police merit board.

Indianapolis police Chief Bryan Roach has recommended the seven-member board terminate officers Michal Dinnsen and Carlton Howard for the June 2017 shooting death of 45-year-old Aaron Bailey.

An internal police review of the shooting found the officers had failed to comply with the department's training and policies.

The Indianapolis Star reports the officers will likely argue during Tuesday's hearing they followed policy and training and feared Bailey was reaching for a weapon. Both have been on administrative leave since the shooting.

Bailey's family is suing the city, contending the officers used excessive force and Bailey posed no threat to them.
